U.S. Airstrikes on Iraq

by Rachel Clarke

This morning U.S. forces struck against targets in northern Iraq. Here's what we know:

    • Two F/A-18 aircraft dropped 500-pound laser-guided bombs on mobile artillery used by ISIS militants, the Pentagon said
    • The artillery was destroyed in the strike, Rear Adm. John Kirby says
    • President Obama authorized the strikes -- to protect U.S. personnel and interests as well as concerns about the actions of ISIS
    • U.S. airlines are now banned from flying over Iraq
